About Dimitri Zafirov

With a focus on machine learning and macroeconomic accounting, Dimitri Zafirov is currently working toward a PhD in accounting at the University of California, Los Angeles. Throughout his career, Dimitri Zafirov has held numerous research positions in the field of economics.

Most recently, Dimitri Zafirov served as a research assistant at H.E.C. Montreal. Utilizing such software as LateX and Python, he analyzed the effects of minimum wage changes on large US retailers and their employees in collaboration with Northwestern-Kellogg. The study linked human resources data, including employee turnover and overall revenues, from roughly 5,000 retailers. While carrying out this research, he also participated in another research project at MOVE, Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona, focusing on government debt management in the United States.

From 2012 to 2013, he supported research on the state of unemployment benefits in the US at the Institute of Applied Economics at H.E.C. Montreal. The work resulted in multiple published papers, including “Unemployment Insurance with Limited Commitment Wage Contracts & Savings,” by professor Rigas Oikonomou. Among his early research positions, he served as a research assistant at Equity Research, a department within Scotiabank. In this position, he focused on portfolio strategy from 2010 to 2011.
